Animal Testing

I first got interested in the topic of animal testing when my sister Kaycie came home one day and started talking about it. She talked about what people do to animals when they test them and how badly mistreated the animals are. I absolutely love animals so when I heard about this, it broke my heart. My sister seemed to be pretty passionate about it to so we started looking on the back of products to see if they said whether they were animal tested or not. To my surprise a lot of them didn’t say that anything about if they were tested on animals. Which made us think if they didn’t clarify if they had been tested or not then they probably had been animal tested. We found a few things that said “not animal tested.” So to be safe we started using products that only said they weren’t animal tested. Ever since then I’ve been trying to stay away from things that are animal tested so at least I feel like I’m helping as much as I can for now.

In the article Wind of Change Challenges Toxicological Regulators it statesFor a single chemical, a two-generation study uses on average 3,200 animals (mostly rats) (Rovida and Hartung 2009).” That’s 3,200 animals alone just in one study. Think about all the animal testing going on all around the world that adds up to be a lot of animals. “Ironically animal models as such have never been validated; rather, it has been taken on good faith that these studies are the best approach for protecting humans.” So people have been testing animals with the hope that it will protect humans not knowing for a fact whether 100% were completely safe. Animals aren’t good sources because we’re not sure that everything that’s safe on them is safe on humans to.

I want to research this issue further because I believe there are alternatives to animal testing. That animals don’t have to suffer to keep humans safe. With today’s technology and already gathered research that we can get away from animal testing and lean more towards the technology we have today. So many animals are hurt and killed from doing this unnecessary testing that we should use a new approach. I want to find out more about animal testing and different ways to prevent it. Is animal testing the best way to ensure our community is safe from bacteria and diseases? With the money it cost and the research we already have we should eliminate animal testing for good.

Animal Testing Prevention

Dear Editor:

My name is Kelsey Wilder and I am a sophomore at Early College High School in Myrtle Beach

I am addressing the problem of animal testing. Even though using animal testing have helped cure diseases and help test products on store, the animals are getting hurt, morphed and even killed. If you look at the back of a shampoo bottle some say they’re not animal tested but others don’t say anything. A poor little bunny could have suffered just so we would know if the product burns our eyes. Does that sound fair or moral to you?

We have been testing animals for decades but don’t even know if we’ll get the same results on animals and people. With the technology and information we have already gathered with animal testing, we should be able to eliminate animal testing for good.

Thank you so much for your time. I appreciate your help and hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Kelsey Wilder

Stuck

I am stuck in a cold metal cage

I don’t know why I deserve to be here

I was a cute little bunny hoping through a meadow

Now I’m here stuck in this dreary cage

Big hands the size of a tree grab me and hold me against my will

The only thing we can do is squeal

No one helps me so I have no choice

I have no control over what this man does to me

And I have no voice

With my eyes open forcefully wide

I have to stay there while they poke and pride

Liquid gets poured into my eyes

Then suddenly everything goes black as night….

All I hear is voices and fingers picking my up by the fur

I can’t see anything and I think I might throw up

My mind is racing as I hear the screams of other animals shrieking in my ear

I feel so helpless with nowhere to go from here

I wonder if there enduring what I just endured

Id have to say this is much obscured

The screams die down and I know what that means

The thing that happens next will happen to me

The fingers return and I try to scurry.

The man picks me up without any worry

I’m picked and pocked all over my body

I don’t think I can take this much longer

I get poked and injected and I know this is the end

I just wish this madness would end

Maybe one day people will understand

That I have feeling and a heart to

The last thing I see when I close my eyes…

Are two scary ones looking back at me.

I hope that other animals don’t go through what I just did

This is all so morbid

Ive been burned, hurt and now killed

I don’t think this will ever yield

Now you’ve seen through my prospective

About the things that go undetected
